The advantages of freeboard are:

• It increases the protection from floods and storms as stormwater often rises above the level shown on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps.
• It helps a person prepare better for ongoing sea-level rise. Massachusetts over the past 100 years has experienced a relative rise in sea level of about 1 foot.
• It greatly reduces flood insurance premiums.

The federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) provides monetary assistance to state and local governments to enforce actions that will lower, minimize, or annihilate future risk to property from the effects of natural calamities. Individual homeowners cannot directly apply for funding but the local governments with a FEMA-approvedHazard Mitigation Planmay apply for them. The Town has acquired a Home Elevation Grant Program to help residents to apply for HMGP funding. Grants are utilized to raise a resident’s house above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) in the 100-year floodplain.
